Groupage / LTL

Groupage and LTL — you pay only for the space you take

In groupage your cargo shares the truck with other shipments and you pay only for the loading metres you occupy. It is the right answer below 10–12 pallets, when a full truck would mean paying for empty space.

Minimum accepted
1 pallet, or 0.4 loading metres
Rough switch to FTL
Above 12–14 pallets
Transit against FTL
24–48h longer, from consolidation
CMR liability
SDR 8.33/kg of the weight short
Trucks

Cargo

What cargo usually travels this way

  • Single pallets to the same consignee
  • Parcels and cases packed properly
  • Spare parts and components
  • Shop stock and replenishments
  • Samples and trial batches before a large contract
Fit

When to choose this option

  • 01 You have between 1 and 12 pallets.
  • 02 You can live with a transit time 24–48h longer than FTL.
  • 03 The cargo is packed and palletised well enough to be handled.
  • 04 You want to test a route before committing to large volumes.
Documents

Which documents you need

The papers below are the ones I ask for or check myself before loading. If you are missing one, tell me at the start and we will sort it out.

  1. 1

    CMR consignment note

Issued separately for each shipment in the groupage load.

  2. 2

    Commercial invoice

Mandatory, matching the goods actually loaded.

  3. 3

    Packing list

It matters more here than anywhere: it identifies your cargo among the rest.

  4. 4

    Clear labelling on every package

Consignee name and address on each pallet, so nothing is confused at sorting.

FAQ

What people ask me about groupage and LTL

When is groupage cheaper than a full truck?

Roughly below 12–14 pallets. Above that a full truck usually gives a better cost per pallet. I work out both and tell you which comes out better.

Is the cargo handled along the way?

Yes — in groupage the cargo passes through at least one consolidation point. That is why the packing and palletising have to be solid.

What cargo does not suit groupage?

Very fragile goods, anything unpalletised, odd shapes, or cargo that cannot be stacked. In those cases I recommend a dedicated truck.

Tell me the route. I will send you a firm price.

It takes under a minute to fill in, or you can just call me. I check availability with carriers and come back with a firm quote, with no hidden costs at unloading.
