Chemical transport — ADR where it is needed, limited quantities where it is allowed

Not all chemical cargo needs a fully equipped ADR truck. Some of it falls under the limited quantities exemption and travels under far lighter requirements, at a noticeably lower cost. The difference is read from the safety data sheet, not guessed — and whoever guesses pays either too much or a fine.

Trucks

Which truck I use for chemical goods transport

ADR-equipped curtainsider

Orange plates, extinguishers sized for the gross weight, intervention kit and protective equipment for the driver.

ADR box trailer

For packaging that must not be exposed to rain or direct sun.

Carriage in limited quantities

Small packaging below the ADR thresholds: reduced requirements, an ordinary truck, a lower cost. I check whether your cargo qualifies.

Truck with a tail lift

For deliveries to distributors and shops with no dock.

Cargo

What cargo usually travels this way

  • Paints, varnishes, thinners and solvents (class 3)
  • Adhesives and sealants in retail packaging
  • Professional cleaning products, acids and bases (class 8)
  • Antifreeze and coolants
  • De-icing agents and treated salt
  • Packaged chemical raw materials, in drums or canisters
Fit

When to choose this option

  • 01 The goods have a UN number and a safety data sheet.
  • 02 You want to find out whether you qualify for limited quantities, before paying for a full ADR truck.
  • 03 You ship regularly to distributors and need a contract price.
  • 04 You have a winter campaign — antifreeze, de-icing — and volumes climb within two weeks.
Documents

Which documents you need

The papers below are the ones I ask for or check myself before loading. If you are missing one, tell me at the start and we will sort it out.

  1. 1

    Safety data sheet

The first document I ask for. Section 14 says whether the goods are regulated and whether they fall under limited quantities.

  2. 2

    ADR transport document

With the UN number, the proper shipping name, the class, the packing group and the total quantity. It does not apply to LQ.

  3. 3

Written instructions in case of emergency

In the driver's language. The carrier provides them; I check they are on board.

  4. 4

    CMR with the ADR particulars

The consignment note repeats the data from the transport document, it does not summarise it.

FAQ

What people ask me about chemical goods transport

What are limited quantities and how do I know whether I qualify?

It is an exemption in ADR for dangerous goods packed in small receptacles, below thresholds set for each UN number. The goods then travel under much lighter requirements and on an ordinary truck. It is read from the safety data sheet and from the size of the packaging — send me the sheet and I will tell you.

Can different classes travel together?

Sometimes yes, sometimes it is forbidden. ADR has segregation rules between classes, and some combinations are not allowed in the same truck. I check compatibility before confirming the shipment, not after.

Do I need a safety adviser?

The obligation to appoint a dangerous goods safety adviser falls on the company that consigns or carries the goods, above certain thresholds. It is not an obligation I cover for you, but I will tell you plainly if from what you describe it looks like you fall under it.

Tell me the route. I will send you a firm price.

It takes under a minute to fill in, or you can just call me. I check availability with carriers and come back with a firm quote, with no hidden costs at unloading.
