Building materials transport — from the depot to the site

Construction cargo has two problems the rest of freight does not: it is often unloaded where there is neither a dock nor a forklift, and half of it breaks if the pallet shifts. I start from those two facts when choosing the truck, not from the number of loading metres.

Usual weight per pallet
800–1,400 kg for tiles and adhesives
Unloading
Tail lift or pallet truck, where there is no dock
Truck allocation
24–48h, slower at the peak of the season
CMR liability
SDR 8.33/kg of the weight short
Trucks

Which truck I use for building materials transport

Truck with a tail lift

The default choice for sites and for small depots. The lift sets the pallet on the ground without a forklift.

Standard curtainsider trailer

For a full truck between depots, with side or top loading for long goods.

Groupage

For 1–12 pallets, when an order does not fill a truck. The cargo must be well palletised and wrapped, because it passes through consolidation.

Truck of 7.5–12 t

For narrow streets, city centres and accesses where an articulated truck cannot turn.

Cargo

What cargo usually travels this way

  • Tiles, ceramics and natural stone, on pallets with edge protectors
  • PVC and aluminium joinery, in upright frames
  • Insulation: polystyrene, mineral wool, membranes
  • Plumbing fittings, pipes and connectors
  • Plasterboard and metal profiles
  • Adhesives, fillers and renders in palletised bags
Fit

When to choose this option

  • 01 Unloading happens on site, with no dock and no forklift.
  • 02 The cargo is fragile — tiles, glass, joinery — and will not take repeated handling.
  • 03 You have an order under 12 pallets and a full truck would mean paying for empty space.
  • 04 You are working to an installation date and the goods must be there before the crew.
Documents

Which documents you need

The papers below are the ones I ask for or check myself before loading. If you are missing one, tell me at the start and we will sort it out.

  1. 1

    CMR or goods accompanying note

CMR internationally, accompanying note domestically. I fill it in; you sign at loading.

  2. 2

    Commercial invoice

Matching the goods actually loaded, not the original order.

  3. 3

    UIT code from e-Transport

Some building materials fall into the high fiscal risk categories. It is checked before departure, not at the first roadside stop.

  4. 4

    Handling instructions

Which pallet must not be stacked, which is unloaded only by pallet truck. Written into the order, not told to the driver by phone.

FAQ

What people ask me about building materials transport

Can it be unloaded without a forklift at destination?

Yes, with a tail lift truck. Tell me at order stage if there is no dock or forklift at delivery, because the tail lift changes the type of truck and therefore the price.

Who is liable if tiles break on the way?

The carrier is liable within the limits of the CMR Convention, but only if the goods were correctly palletised and packed at loading. Tiles on a pallet without edge protectors and without tight wrapping do not survive a hard brake — which is why I ask about the packing method before allocating the truck.

Do I need a UIT code for building materials?

It depends on the category of goods and on the weight and value thresholds in RO e-Transport. I check it for your specific cargo before departure and tell you whether it has to be declared.

Tell me the route. I will send you a firm price.

It takes under a minute to fill in, or you can just call me. I check availability with carriers and come back with a firm quote, with no hidden costs at unloading.
